She actually got an Emmy nom this year, Jenna couldn't believe it. She was going to be sitting there with some of her favorite leading ladies of comedy, with a one-in-five chance of winning.
Or, as Frank liked to put it - a four-out-of-five chance of losing.
Still, she liked to think she was going to do well this year. Her dress was killer - she was finally able to get her hands on a fabulous Carolina Herrera gown.
Cerie told her it was hot, Liz told her she looked nice, and Jack actually checked out her ass for once.
So, yeah. She was gonna do pretty well at the Emmys this year.
So imagine her surprise when she was sitting there with all the other nominees, big smile on her face since there was a camera right in front of it, and they called the name of one of the stupid Desperate Housewives.
She clapped, she did the fake "they deserved to win" nod, and held back the tears. They didn't deserve to win, she did.
The next day, she avoided everyone at TGS, Liz included. Her entourage took care of any incoming calls or people (Liz) knocking at the door wanting to see if she was okay.
A lot of the day was spent either crying or napping. After one of said-naps, Jenna woke up to find her dressing room empty, and a folded note standing up on one of her end tables.
Under the note was a simple but lovely English rose, white with just a hint of pink toward the inside of each petal. She picked it up, smelled it, and felt a smile hit her face for the first time in the last 24 hours. Then she opened the note, and could practically hear the author's distinctive drawl.
I thought you deserved to win, Ms. Maroney.
And I also thought you looked very pretty in your dress.
But mostly I thought that you deserved to win.
Condolences,
Kenneth Parcell, NBC Page
Jenna chuckled to herself, reading the note a couple times over again before setting it on her dressing table and checking her reflection.
For the first time that day, she left her dressing room, and went right to the closest Page desk -- Kenneth's desk. Her heart was pounding for reasons unknown; it wasn't like Kenneth wasn't much to look at or anything, but there was something about him, about the gesture with the rose that was so incredibly... sweet.
He was on the phone when she approached the desk, and stood up gentlemanly to acknowledge her when he was done. "Oh hello, Ms. Maroney. Ms. Lemon's been askin' about you, and I just don't know what to tell her."
As always, he had that perpetual smile on his face, and Jenna suddenly couldn't help herself. She came around the desk and wrapped her arms around him in a hug.
She felt Kenneth hesitate before he held her back tentatively, smiling at her awkwardly and taking a respectful step back when they'd pulled away.
She looked at him, tried to figure out why he decided to leave her the rose. "Why--"
Obviously reading her mind, he shrugged bashfully. "I just thought a pretty lady should know her worth when she's feeling down on herself."
Jenna smiled. "Thank you, Kenneth."
The bright beaming smile was back. "You're surely welcome, Ms. Maroney!"
Before she could say another word, the phone rang and he sat back down at his desk to answer it. "Studio 6H, this is Kenneth..."
And Jenna stopped mid-step to watch him a moment before she smiled and turned to head back to her dressing room.
