SUMMARY:
*****
The rain always calmed her. And infrequent as it was in Las Vegas, she enjoyed it even more. She considered calling in sick every time it rained, just to be able to sit home, sip coffee, and just enjoy it. But tonight, the rain was not calming. Lightning cracked the sky, electric currents flowing through every living creature, sparking them to sudden animation. She was no different. The lightning had given her a charge; she felt the thunder vibrating in her chest as she contemplated the change coming her way. Their way.
How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
The rain soaked her, first dotting her skin and clothing before slowly covering her in its cool wetness. She welcomed it, she enjoyed it, content to be out in it. More lightning flashed and she could almost feel its charge as more rain fell, the droplets this time almost pricking her skin, making it ripe with electricity. It was the perfect night she'd hoped for. Puddles rippled with each footstep on the sidewalk, and her shoes were soaked as she stepped through the stream in the driveway. Thunder rumbled low in her belly now, making her eager, quickening her path up the driveway.
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannonball
She stopped just before the stoop, not wanting to step under the awning for fear she wouldn't feel the rain anymore. The rain guided her. The rain brought her here, the lightning lit her way. Now she stood contemplating... staring up at the window far over her head and to the right... wondering. Wondering if the rain calmed him too. Wondering if the lightning's current was flowing through him now, as it was through her. Wondering if the thunder rumbling across Nevada made him anticipate the change that was coming.

Was he even aware a change was coming for them? Did he remember? As he sat in his stoic, impersonal townhouse, studying his multi-legged creatures from the monochrome safety of his living room... was he aware?

The light came on near the window and she saw his face; squinted and smiled through the rain up at it. He was aware of her, at least.

He hadn't called today. He always called on these days. Whether they had already seen each other at work or not. Did he forget this time? She swept the saturated hair back from her face and continued to squint through the rain, her clothes now contouring her like second skin as the door creaked open, his form silhouetted in the light from the entryway.
Wake up the dawn and ask her why

"What are you doing?" he yelled out to her, outstretching a hand to welcome her in. "You're soaked! Come on."
"You promised!"
These two words stopped him cold, and he tossed a glance toward the sky from under the safety of his awning, a smile forming on his lips as he watched the rain continue to pour. Still, he looked down at her and played dumb. "Promised what, Catherine?"
Wipe that tear away now from your eye
She took a step toward him, droplets of rain sliding off her eyelashes and down her cheeks like tears. "Twenty years ago, I met a man in the middle of a rainstorm. After hours of talking under a cafe awning, I was struck with the urge to dance in the rain. I asked him to dance with me and he said no. I begged, and he still said no. But that man promised me... that if, twenty years from that day, if we were still friends... and it just happened to be raining... on that day, he would dance with me in the rain."
His smile caressed her heart as he joined her now on the driveway, not even flinching, not breaking their stare, as the rain soaked his clothes. "I suppose, then, that this could be construed as an act of Fate."

Her smile mirrored his as she took his hand and led him further out into the downpour. "That is the only explanation for why we're here now, Gil."
"Good. I'm glad we're on the same page." And he pulled her close.

Her arms draped over his shoulders as his wound around her waist, and they began to sway, affectionate smiles on their faces as lightning illuminated the blues of their eyes. "Did you really ever think we'd be here, Gil?"
He drew her closer, their rain-slicked bodies now pressed together, offering warmth, comfort, and a wave of desire. "Here, dancing in the rain? Or here, still 'together', after twenty years."
"Either."

"Well," he sighed, his forehead kissing hers for only the briefest of moments before their cheeks found each other, "never in a million years did I think it'd be raining again twenty years to the day that we met, but..." He pulled away for just a second to search her beautiful eyes, a smile slowly tugging his lips apart. "I knew we'd still be 'together', Catherine. I knew we'd make it if nothing else did."

A smiled reply flitted across her lips for a split-second before she went back to searching his eyes, the million dollar question on her mind. "And... was it worth it?"
Cause people believe that they're gonna get away from the summer
But you and I, we'll never die
The world's still spinning 'round, we don't know why
He ran a hand through her rain-soaked hair, gliding down its slippery smoothness as he murmured, "Every second... of every day... for twenty years. It was all worth it."
Their cheeks found each other again as they continued to sway in the rain. Catherine sighed at the serenity of the moment, still charged with electricity, and pressed her lips against his shoulder, her confession barely heard above the rainfall. "I wanted to ask you to kiss me in the rain that night, Gil."
He stopped swaying, arms still tight around her waist. He slid a hand torturously slow up her back as he pulled away.

"Really?"
"Mm-hmm. But, now it's been twenty years, and--"
"Right, right." He ducked his head.

Catherine cocked her own head, trying to recapture his gaze. When she'd succeeded, her smile was soft... encouraging. "And now I don't feel like I need to ask anymore."
He blinked once, twice, as she came a little closer... her body heat mingling with his own as his other hand now slid up her back, tangling in her hair. He exhaled his smile, stroking her cheek with one hand. "Have I mentioned how glad I am that we're on the same page, Catherine?"
Her answering chuckle was cut off by their lips meeting.

Lightning struck the ground somewhere in the distance, crackling, shaking the ground... yet they remained fused together, oblivious to any kind of electricity but the kind sparking between their lips.

"Come inside, Catherine," he whispered, nipping at her lips before pulling completely away. "To celebrate." As if he needed to persuade her further, he cracked a grin. "I bought champagne."
She grinned up at him through rain-dotted eyelashes, her face held safely in his hands... and she nodded. Then, as she followed him inside, she threw another glance over her shoulder and smiled, forever thankful for the rain.
