"What did you want to be when you grew up?"
"What?"
"When you were a kid, Bones. What did you wanna be when you grew up? Or were you just born grown-up?"
Temperance Brennan chuckled and swiveled her heavy head to look at her partner, Seeley Booth. They were both lying on their backs on the floor of Booth's living room, both of their heads spinning from the alcohol they'd ingested over the course of the evening. They had been toasting their two-year anniversary as partners. But the toasting with champagne turned to a second toast with some Merlot, and then they both decided they should also toast with vodka.
"I can't remember back that far," she finally responded, watching the ceiling spin above her counter-clockwise. She squinted her eyes at the ceiling in a vain attempt to stop the spinning.
She heard Booth chuckling next to her, his hand limply batting at hers. He blew a loud raspberry of disbelief through his lips. "Come on Bones, sure ya can! Think back. Did you wanna be, like... a teacher, or... a nurse, or... an actress?"
"How very sexist of you," she slurred, but a smile curved her lips nonetheless.
"Awww, I didn't mean it that way," he insisted, his own words drawn out and slightly slurred together.
Quietly, she told him, "Yes, I wanted to be a teacher."
"Really?" He looked over at her and his brown eyes lit up. That lovely boyish grin swept across his face and it made Tempe want to reach out and just kiss him. "You did, seriously?"
Tempe nodded and let her eyes slip closed while her fingers searched for Booth's. They tangled together effortlessly and she took a deep breath through her nose. "I wanted to teach second grade science."
Booth chuckled. "Science, huh? Get outta town, I never woulda figured."
"Shut up." She reached out to whack him in the stomach, forgetting their hands were still entwined. Both their hands wound up smacking him on the stomach. "I thought that would've been fun, doing those basic experiments with my students, like... planting a little bean seed or an apple seed in a styrofoam cup and waiting for it to grow. Or, filling a plastic cup with salt water and then setting it in the window for a few days until all the water evaporated and just the salt was left in the cup..."
"God you're boring sometimes, Bones. Even your childhood dreams were boring."
"Well let's hear yours, then, Mr. Excitement."
She looked over at him to see him rolling his eyes. "Jeez, Bones, I was just teasing you. And may I say your witty replies get less and less... witty... when you're drunk."
"Likewise."
A moment of silence passed, and Tempe swiveled her head again, trying not to go cross-eyed as she focused on her partner's face, and found him drifting off. She reached her leg out and kicked him. "Booth."
He snorted awake. "What? Five more minutes."
She chuckled. "You were going to tell me what you wanted to be when you grew up."
"Oh. Right." He moved to rub his eyes and also seemed to forget about their joined hands. Tempe's hand followed and they both rubbed his eyes. "When I was little, I wanted to be the next Gene Simmons."
"I don't know what that means."
Another raspberry blew from his lips as he chuckled, tilting his head to grin at her. "Oh, Bones," he sighed affectionately.
She raised her eyebrow in response, but he didn't elaborate. Instead, he told her, "Gene Simmons was in KISS. I wanted to be the next frontman for KISS."
"So you wanted to be a professional kisser?"
He rolled his eyes melodramatically. "Oh man, Bones, what am I gonna do with you? I love you, but you gotta get out there more."
She rolled her eyes back. "I am out there."
He laughed. "Yes, you certainly are."
She whacked him again, this time with her free hand. "You know what I mean." After a pause, the rest of his comment registered with her, and her head snapped to look at him in shock. "You love me?"
Booth shrugged, completely nonchalant. "Of course I do."
"Because we're partners."
He shrugged one shoulder now, and tilted his head slightly, squeezing her hand. "That's part of the reason, sure."
"What's the rest of the reason?"
He smiled enigmatically, and Tempe remembered why she often wanted to wring his neck. "Why do you wanna know, Bones?"
"Just..." She frowned up at the ceiling, her scientific reasoning somehow failing her. Maybe it was the alcohol. "Just to know."
"Because I just... love you, Bones."
"That's... not... helpful."
Booth chuckled, voice raising slightly. "Well what do you want me to say? I have no clue what all the reasoning is. I mean, we have a good time together, you're funny in your own weirdo squinty way, um... well, you're pretty much the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen, so that's definitely part of it, and... I dunno, I just love you."
Tempe raised her eyebrows at her partner and rolled carefully onto her side, propping her spinning head up. "Huh."
"I wanted to kiss you in Vegas, y'know," he blurted out, grinning at her shyly.
"You did?"
He nodded slowly and played with her fingers. "Yup. But... I dunno, I chickened out."
Tempe frowned. "You don't seem like the type to do that."
"Yeah, I know," he chuckled. "And yet... everything's totally different when it comes to you."
"Hmm." She inched a little closer to him, feeling dizzy for a completely different reason. "Think you'll ever try kissing me again?"
Booth, intrigued by this line of questioning, quirked on eyebrow and gave her a little grin. "Think I'll ever be able to kiss you without you punchin' my lights out or something? Or maybe doing one of those kickass kickboxing moves on me?"
Tempe had to laugh, and she laid her head on her partner's chest, draping an arm across his stomach. His arms immediately went around her and she relaxed into him, the spinning in her head starting to slow. "Yeah, I'll probably let you kiss me, Booth."
She felt him lift his head up to look at her, and felt the smile on his face. A similar smile plucked at her lips and she closed her eyes as she heard him say, "Well... alright then."
"But not today."
"No, not today. You gotta be sober, Bones. I want that kiss to rock your world."
She started to drift off. "You're awfully confident. What if it sucks?"
He chuckled and she felt him stroking her hair. "It's you and me, Bones. It could never suck."
Tempe was quiet for a moment, smiling to herself. Then, softly, she said, "Happy anniversary, Booth."
She felt his smile against her hair just before she drifted off to sleep, curled up with her partner on his living room floor, and his voice was soft as he echoed, "Happy anniversary, Temperance."
