I look back over my old blog posts, and I notice that I've been very conservative in my sports hopes this fall. I think I had good reason to be; I am a Philadelphian, after all. But when even Rachel is making fun of me for not trusting my teams completely, perhaps I've gone too far

I'm also rooting for the Phillies bigtime. hopefully doug won't break any lamps this year. :) And hopefully no one's lawn gets set on fire in Tampa when they lose.

Heh. Even now, when the Phils are up 3-1, I'm sticking with my "in 7" prediction. Although I'm now leaning heavily towards "Phils in" as opposed to my previous "Dunno, but it'll be"

The only question now remains... how many undefeated non-national-championship seasons can JoPa actually rack up? :)

At the moment, he's at four. Let's see how they stack up:

• 1968: Unbeaten, but got sent to the Orange bowl because #1 Ohio State (undefeated) played #2 USC (undefeated, one tie) in the Rose.
• 1969: Richard Nixon declared Texas the national champions in December, before the bowl games were even played. (I didn't know the President had that power; I'll need to check the Constitution.)
• 1973: A whopping 7 teams finished unbeaten, and at least three of those won their bowl games, including PSU. I'll call that one "fair."
• 1986: PSU actually did win the national title, undefeated, by beating (ahem) Miami in the Fiesta bowl.
• 1994: PSU finished undefeated and was ranked #2, but got shut out of the Bowl Coalition games, because the Big 10 can't learn to play well with others.

Even at my most prognosticatory, I couldn't have predicted what happened on Monday night.
