Is it close enough to Christmas that I can talk about Christmas music now? I like Christmas music. In fact, most of my customary good taste goes right out the window when it comes to Christmas music -- yes, that means I even like Mannheim Steamroller, in small doses. Not Jingle Dogs, though; I have limits. Of course, I don't have to work in a ( Read more... )

Yep, I knew that. I'm not a fanboy or anything...I've never seen them live, and I don't own any albums...but it ain't Christmas yet until I've heard it.

The PBS special with Pavarotti. The bit where the wide-eyed, terrified little kid sings "Gesu Bambino" with the Extra Large Tenor is a favorite since my youth.

I'm also fond of about half of the Roches Christmas album, though that's in large part due to its association with the Feast of the Groaning Board.

Adeste Fidelis kicks ass, in just about any arrangement I can think of.

Oooh, the Roches Christmas album...forgot about that one.

As for Adeste Fidelis, how about the solo version I did in the Atherton basement, that one time? As I recall, your roommate didn't believe me when I said I knew it in Latin.

For the more depressingly religious angle on things, I like Trisha Yearwood's Wasn't His Child.

I generally like Christmas music, though. Not fussy about versions.

Any of the songs from White Christmas. Mom would watch it nearly every year when the season turned. It makes an impression on you after a while.

Wow, that really is a Christmas album, isn't it? Strangely, although a bunch of those songs get regular airplay hereabouts at Christmastime -- the Elton John, the McCartney, the Roy Wood, even the Wham song, and "Do They Know It's Christmas" of course -- Slade's is only vaguely familiar to me. I'm sure I've heard it, but not often.

I'm not too surprised that Slade didn't travel well. I think only our love of the underdog and the valiant amateur allowed them to get away with what they produced. :)
