Pepperonis are meat, you know

Not dead! Just busy!

Pointless observation: We're in the habit of getting pizza for dinner on Friday nights. It's a tradition that goes back to when I was a kid. But our local pizza place is always mobbed on Friday nights during Lent. I had no idea there were so many Catholics in this area. Aren't any of them giving up pizza for Lent?

When did the tradition go to no meat on Fridays only during Lent? When my mother was growing up, it was every Friday.

Heck if I know. My parents did it every Friday as well, but that may have just been an excuse to get pizza. At least, until Dad realized that pepperoni is meat (true story!)

The town where I went to junior high and high school was overwhelmingly Catholic, which meant toasted cheese sandwiches and tomato soup every Friday during Lent, even in the public high school.

My Scout troop had a long-standing tradition of several of the leaders making pizzas over the evenings during the Spring camping weekend, and they'd frequently finish making the first Friday night meat pizza slightly before midnight rather than right after - which meant chasing down the first-years (who apparently had an exemption from dietary laws due to age?) and tangerinpenguin the token Protestant before it got cold :)
