Parvati avoided both Colin and Demelza for as long as she was able. When anyone asked about what she'd seen, she flushed and repeated the same story, "Colin and Demelza were snogging in the broom closet and he was splotchy. He really needs a better skin care regimen."
There wasn't anything else to share. She was happy that the match worked out, very very happy. In fact, she was ecstatic if a bit concerned with Colin's skin care regimen. He'd looked unhealthy with as splotchy as he'd been. Perhaps Demelza hadn't been the best choice of partner, not if she did that to him.
Her avoidance didn't stop her from watching Colin. When their eyes met, he stared at her solidly while she turned and looked away. The blush was surely due to the embarrassment over what she'd interrupted and did not have anything to do with her imagination. It was only natural to wonder what it would feel like to be snogged like that. She'd wonder about any boy she saw snogging a girl. Well, any boy but Ron Weasley when she'd caught him snogging Hermione.
The easy camaraderie after their impromptu study session disappeared completely into something she didn't quite understand. It wasn't antagonistic, Colin didn't seem to want to hurt her or yell at her. It wasn't unfriendly, either, Colin didn't seem to go out of his way to avoid her.
In fact, it seemed the opposite. The more she tried to avoid him, the more he seemed to be around her. He was always watching her. It flattered and distracted her from her embarrassment.
"Did you hear the news?" Lavender's voice told Parvati that she had a brilliantly juicy secret to share.
"What news? The rumour about Mandy Brocklehurst?" Lavender only shook her head with a grin. "Was it about Ginny Weasley?" Another shake and Parvati grinned before leaning in and whispering, "Go on, tell me."
"Creepy dumped Demelza without a word of explanation. Rumour has it that she was merely a fill in and that there's someone else he has his eye on." Lavender's conspiratorial tone combined with what she said had Parvati's heartbeat increasing.
"Do you know who it is?" Parvati cast an eye around the common room, looking for a likely candidate. Her heart felt clamped and its beat stuttered.
"Not even Dennis knows and I already asked him about it." The squeezing around her heart eased. If anyone would know other than Colin, it would be Dennis.
Just then, Colin came in and Parvati smiled at him. When he saw her, it almost seemed like he smiled at her.
