My parents supported me through Uni (I think they gave me £4-500 a month which was possible with them both working) and my grandparents paid the tuition fees (back when we were there they were only £1k a year). My parents are by no means loaded (middle management and a teacher) but they are very careful and saved and have instilled same attitude in me.
I'm very similar, I save up to buy stuff rather than getting it on credit. Of course now I have no choice, with my erratic income noone in their right mind would offer me credit!
Full ride scholarships (room and board, tuition, books, and other incidentals) for undergraduate, master's and grad, and I paid off the cat's radiation therapy a few months ago.
