I had my tonsils out in 2007 and day four was almost as bad as day one because that's when the scabs all came off. I didn't really care for the taste of the codeine based painkillers (probably had the same liquid stuff you do) but I took the full dosage as often as the bottle said I could (I forget if it was every 4 hours or every 6 hours).
Since it tasted so bad I couldn't wait until I could stop taking it. I'm not sure if I got it refilled or not, but I do think I finished the bottle. Dependency never even entered my mind, but I guess I hadn't been watching House as much as I do now :-). If I were you I wouldn't worry about it. As soon as my throat healed to the point where I could eat normally again I forgot all about the painkillers. My addiction to milkshakes 3 times a day was much harder to break I'm afraid.
Hope you've made it past day four and you're on the mend again.
thanks to everyone's words, i went on the regular schedule of the meds and it is doing a world of good! i think i'm on the back side of it...but damned if i ain't gonna get a refill today!
I had a prescription for Vicodin in tablet form when I had herniated discs in my neck. Like you, I was afraid of the stuff, so I took just enough to make it work. For example, I could take up to 2, 2x a day...I was taking 1/2 a pill, once.
It just made me not notice the pain, which is what I needed.
Sounds like you are doing the same thing, so you should be ok.
thanks to everyone's encouragement, i'm taking the stuff as directed...and it's making a big difference. i can still feel it, but it really takes the edge off it, so i can get some rest. i think i might be on the backside...fingers x'd!
If the pain meds are working, take them. I'm told by a man that knows about such things that the idea of painkillers is that you remain largely pain free. If you take them "when you feel you need them" it's too late. Regular doses as prescribed is the key and if you are then still getting pain you need to speak to the physician about increasing the dose.
From my own experience I was on patient controlled morphine post op and coedine based meds for quite a while after that and have had no dependency issues. For the amount of time you are going to be taking them I really wouldn't worry.
Exactly. When Steve broke his leg the orthopedic surgeon told him his job was to be pain free so he could heal. The stress of pain and the fear of it impedes the healing process.
Steve was a little concerned about addiction too. After he was well on the mend, I started going back into the office. I came home one evening to a dark house and Steve sitting on the sofa in the glow of his laptop, softly weeping. "What's the matter?" I asked. "Are you in pain?" He didn't know, but just felt terribly sad all of a sudden. I probed for the cause, then asked, "When was the last time you took a Vicodin?" "Four days ago--I just stopped taking them because I didn't want to be an addict." Well, I explained that you have to taper these things off, and called a doctor friend who agreed. After a few days of gradually reducing the Vicodin he was off it and feeling great.
thanks to yours and everyone's encouragement, i'm taking the meds as directed and they have done a great deal of good for me. i can still feel it, but it definitely takes the edge off so i can rest. i think i'm one the back side of it now...fingers x'd!
