It is a good day....25 years too late for me, I'd have stayed in if I could have been out, and probably would have been living on retired 0-5 or O-6 pay, which would have been nice.
I just did a google image search for gay veteran for an icon, and your picture of you in your gay veteran t-shirt came up on the first page. Man you get around.
Technically, that's not what it means, but it's a step in that direction and practically, that does mean they will probably stop discharges until they get the the rules changed. Prior to DADT you could not be gay and allowed to serve. Bill Clinton tried to see this as a step forward saying you could be gay, just as long as no one knew it. Now that DADT will be repealed we are technically back to where we were 17 years ago. The Uniform Code of Military Justice needs to be ameneded to permit gay people to serve, and it is going to take the President and the Secretary of Defense and the chiefs of the Armed Services to certify it won't affect the ability of the military to perform their mission. Then once that certification is compete there is still a 60 day waiting period until gays are allowed to serve. We still have the Marine and Army commanders saying that it's going to affect their mission, so it's going to take the SecDefense and the President to make the certification over their objections.
Hate to be the voice of dissent, but gay rights are given and taken away often, in very much the same manner that a parent will punish a misbehaving child by taking away tv privelages.. I hope this new policy in the military sticks.
