Do the sleep study. Let me repeat myself: DO. THE. SLEEP. STUDY.
I've had my CPAP for 4 weeks as of tomorrow. November 5, 2009, will always be the Line Of Demarcation in my life - between Not-Sleeping (thus feeling like warmed-over shit all day long) and Sleeping The Deepest I've Slept In 20 Years.
Woofer, if you think you need a sleep study, call Junior's office and ask them to set up a sleep study for you now. The time around the holidays tends to be less busy in sleep centers, so you might get in sooner than you would otherwise.
Matt can tell you straight off if you stop breathing or not while you are sleeping. Yes a sleep study is necessary, but that one observation is not rocket science. If there is a spare machine and mask in the house, then start using it in the man time. Once you get the study done and your own machine it will be better.
Don't wait too long to get it done. I made that mistake while I was still traveling extensively for work. My big push to finally get it done came after I woke up in my rental car in Orlando after falling asleep and driving over a traffic island at 4:30 AM. I was lucky that the only thing injured was the car.
