Turning 21 and Music.

Jul 30, 2006 18:50

Last weekend, I bought tickets to see Andrew Bird. Not that big of a deal, aside from being able to actually afford it for once, and it's an all-ages show.

But the beauty happened today when I bought two tickets to see Menomena at the Doug Fir which is a place where folk of legal age can go and listen to people play music, should they wish. And I ( Read more... )

I saw Andrew Bird at the Doug Fir last year. Good acoustics for his whistle-reverb. Downstairs performance space aside, I look forward to seeing how long it takes before the DF becomes as repellent to you as it has to me. Until then, enjoy the gold-veiny coke-mirror bathrooms and futuristic ski-lodge motif and don't make eye contact with the sociopathic security guards encircling the smokin' patio. They will cut you.

He's playing at the Aladdin this year, not that I have any way to compare it to him at the Doug Fir... I'm just hoping I can form a large enough group so we can grab good seats and hold them, regardless of pee-trips. I want to be able to lick his sweat off of my uplifted face.

Seeing who's played there and is playing there in the future, I can safely assume it's full of dicks sometimes. If not all the time. And yes, I have heard some horror stories about the guards. You'd think hipsters would be a harmless group of people and there wouldn't be a need for knife-happy security.

Yeah, but loathsome, sneering hipster staff with over-attentive security's muscle power on their side is a fearful combination. It's the only place I've been to where one door guy will check my ID, a second will stamp my wrist, a third will check for my wrist-stamp even though he's standing 2 feet from the dood who just stamped it, and a fourth will stamp my other wrist (for subterranean performance-space access). A whole assembly line of prickery. Some friends have also gotten the stinkeye and the drinkin'-patio security warning, "Let me assess your level of drunkenness, or I can't let you in here," after they'd had, like, one beer each. I was thinking of writing an anti-Doug Fir piece for Swoon (none of the local publications will do it, since the DF has 'em all in its advertising pocket), but I wasn't sure I could make it interesting or funny to non-Portlandites. Either way, I look forward to your reaction.

I absolutely think that you could make an anti-DF piece interesting to non-Portlanders because there has to be an equivalent to it in other cities with a similar music scene. That would definitely be a piece I'd look forward to.

I couldn't imagine living in a place where North American music is so readily available, but you'd never get the chance to see them live. :(

I saw Andrew, and he was amazing. I wish I could see him again. Best live show I ever saw. He really is incredible live, I think he sounds better live. His voice was just amazing. Also maybe it depends on the venue. We were in a really small place with less than 100 people so we were all close. I hope you get a similar experience.

I can't believe how strict the laws are in the U.S. for drinking. Here (montreal) the legal age is 18... but even 16 year olds get away with fake IDs. Sometimes it's a good thing, but the older I get the more I want the 16 year olds to disappear from bars I go to.

Boobs are great indeed to have.

My stance is this: If you're able to die for your country, you should be able to have a drink in your country. There's always news about teen drinking and stupid shit that they do to kill themselves, but that's going to happen with stupid people anywhere. Myself, I could have handled drinking at 18. Even at my most teenage and stupid, I never went too far.

But yeah. Stupid people always ruin drinking for the rest of us. Just last night, some frat kids invaded our favorite bar and were total dickwads. I didn't think frat kids ventured far from their homes, and I would rather their actions follow my narrow perceptions of them.

I can't wait for Andrew Bird, I know it's going to be good!

I'm turning 21 in a few weeks, so I can relate to your excitement.

Have fun at the Andrew Bird show! He was in town over here a few months back, but I didn't have enough spare money to buy tickets.
