There are some very interesting old synagogues in Montferrat - in Asti, Moncalvo, and Casale Monferrato. Next time I go, I'll try to visit...

Ooooh. We saw one in Cordoba, but the exterior was very plain and unassuming-looking (for obvious reasons), and the decorative portions of the interior had been damaged fairly extensively.

That is not what I'd call convenient, no. Could you make a side trip for the NY date, maybe?

Actually, looking at the webpage I discovered that they're in Berkeley on the 15th, when I am also in Berkeley.

Yes. I'm not making any promises regarding my energy level, though...

Well, I'm going to be there too, so I get to rub your belly!
If that's okay with you.

You're allowed to rub my belly. Especially since you asked first! Strangers and people who don't ask get smacked in the schnoz... :)

I've been reading the most recent bio of Lucrezia Borgia, and in the chapters about her life as duchess of Ferrara, there's a lot of citation about how important the Jewish community there was; unlike other Italian cities, they didn't live in a ghetto, have to wear special clothing, and could work in any trade. As the Gonzaga of Mantua and the Este of Ferrara were dynastically and culturally intertwined, it's interesting to see that there was a Jewish theatrical group at the court in Mantua.
