- In my head, Yuki Kajiura's Moonflower is totes the theme song to The Etched City. Just sayin'. It's all holy silver twinkling layered over this lush, green sound that's sort of dirty, like it's covered in a layer of grime. (...I realize my personal reaction to that song might be a little odd.) I can't even listen to it without thinking of the ( Read more... )

In my head, Kajiura's 'Labyrinth' is the theme song to The Privilege of the Sword.

The Silver Phoenix bullshit is bad. BAAAAD. I am reminded of the infamous editions of Lord of the Rings whose covers prominently featured a cassowary.

Roger Ebert and Drunk Hulk are wise men.

A... A cassowary???

Which OST did Labyrinth come from? I wanna say it was either Noir or El wossname de la Bruja.

Or an emu. It's hard to tell. Tolkien himself had choice words. There's a whole thing about the unfortunate cover history of his work here.

Cazador. And it's actually from .hack//SIGN.

...ahaha, oh my god, what the fuck? Those are... kind of awesome, actually, but kind of completely inappropriate.

Oh. I can't keep up with what's from where anymore. TOO MUCH. *listens* I get a more rural feel than an urban one from that one - rolling green hills and mist.

Edit: haha, sorry, HTML fail.

LOL @ Avatar. I am so glad it is getting panned across the board and that more than one critical review is highlighting the whitewashing as one important reason why it is fail. Up yours, Shymalan and co.!

One thing that confuses and irritates me about book cover whitewashing is, the editors are basically lying to readers. Won't the white girls they're trying to attract be confused when they discover the book is not actually about a white girl protagonist? And won't some of them be angry, because maybe they wanted to read a story about a white girl protagonist, as is their right as consumers who should get what they assumedly paid for? And won't some non-white girls, like me, not buy the book because I will think it is about a white girl set in a contemporary fantasy setting, possibly with vampires, and I don't really dig that genre? So the editors are not, actually, reaching a "wider" audience. They are choosing which audiences they want to attract, inviting some and potentially not inviting ( ... )

I knowwww, wtf. I think publishers are, much like Hollywood, incapable of conceiving of the fact that society has advanced. Yes, there are plenty of people left that won't pick up a book with a POC on it, but they aren't the majority? Even my kind of racist dad reads books about, like, this black detective or something, and it would never enter his mind that there was anything unusual about this. Silver Phoenix didn't sell. It didn't sell because nobody was freaking carrying the thing. I mean, obviously it is not going to sell if it has no visibility ( ... )

I read about the cover issue with Silver Phoenix a day or so ago. While I might not have bought the book based on the cover alone, I would have at least looked over it. The new covers they've made for the book read as generic YA paranormal junk I pass on all the time. And although I don't have the graphic design background, the covers look a bit amateur? Maybe I just have a grudge against the fonts used.

Am I the only person who can spend days on end writing and tweaking and writing and tweaking a story of less than 1000 words?

No, you are not alone on that subject. I didn't post half of what I wrote for the last drabble-thon 'cause I'm still tweaking it. >_>

AUGH YES THE COVERS LOOK SO TACKY AND AMATEURISH SRSLY JUST WHY

WHY WOULD YOU EVER

The whitewashing issue should be the most important thing, but I just keep boggling at the shoddiness every time I look!

I bought SP a while back when I first heard sales were doing badly. I'd been interested and planning to get it at some point before that, but that spurred me on. It's a really fun read, and it's really disappointing that this has happened. :( Although, hey, bright side, at least its sequel is getting the chance to come out and it hasn't been crushed altogether.

Phew, it's not just me, then. Harper's isn't the smallest publishing company around, either, so when they use fonts that I remember seeing on student work, it kinda makes me wince. THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE SHINIER ONES THAT AREN'T DEFAULT FOR WORD. It makes one wonder if the art department gave it to their intern or something.

Of course, I know the types of covers I enjoy, and the fact photo manips are the biggest in-thing annoys me. Give me a beautifully painted cover any day. ; ~;

Before the cover changes, I hadn't heard of it (that I recall). So, I am almost glad this happened, because I would have remained in the dark about it. I read the online sample and really like it, so I'm going to scout out the local B&N to see if on the off chance they have it before I order it online.

Those fonts are pretty lame (and the gradients, augh!) but the thing that really gets me is those awfully pasted on bits. It's like it should come with the caption MY DAGGER/NECKLACE IS PASTEDE ON YEY

I'm okay with photo manips (although I tend to prefer paintings too), but if you're not willing to spend the time and cash to do a proper manip... don't do a manip. x_x

That is an upside! inkstone has a pet project where she's trying to get people who bought the book after hearing about all this to write reviews, so more people will hear about it, so that hopefully more people will go out and buy the sequel... So that hopefully publishers will get the message that people want to read these kinds of books.

(eta: er, oops. Make that inkstone over on DW.)

On racism and sexism: Somebody wake me up when we get out of the 1900s.... OH WAIT.

I'm not even wasting my money on the Avatar money. I'll get my entertainment free from the mockery.

I hope very, very few people waste their money on Avatar, and I hope it crashes hard.

(Although that itself will also have negative ramifications, sadly. This is a no-win situation. :<)
