what if you've known each other for years? I also think there's a difference between "love" and "in love".

I do think there is a difference between being in love and love. I can love my friend while not being in love with him/her. Being in love implies romantic interest. I still think that either one still requires time to develop.

I think it depends on the circumstances in which you've known each other. If you've been friends for years then started dating, then I still think you need more than a few weeks time to say "I love you" or "I'm in love with you" because you initially started out as friends, you probably only have "friend feelings." I don't think platonic love can make that leap to romantic love so easily. But, it can also be a different case if you've been friends with someone for years and had a romantic interest at the same time. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that it's all circumstantial.
