Notes: This is a post 2x22 AU in which Sam stays dead. I wrote this story in addition to iconning it, and it turned into almost 2,000 words and therefore isn't going to be posted here. Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) are doing what they do best-hunting-when they notice a sudden upswing of demon activity. Trouble, they surmise, is on its way. Elsewhere, prophet Sarah Weiss (Catherine Tate) begins having visions of a falling angel named Kell (Benedict Cumberbatch) and a Righteous Man; the man who must save him. Sarah finds her Righteous Man easily enough in Dean Winchester, and tells him he must allow Kell to work with him and gain back his status of obedient service to Good. Given Dean's history with Heaven and angels, he's disinclined to act.
Enter Rena Angioli (Alex Kingston), a sexy agent of humanity. According to her, if Dean works with Sarah, he'll only be giving the angels more cause to interfere with humans. She does her best to seduce him to her side (despite the objections of both Sam and Sarah), all the while hiding her own wicked motivations. Thankfully for Dean, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) shows up with the news that Rena is a fallen angel herself, and she's working to bring about the apocalypse independent of both Heaven and Hell. Faced with the truth, Rena is forced to flee before she is killed. Dean, ever the good soldier, relents and allows Kell to serve his penance on their hunts. More importantly, in restoring Kell to his status of angel, Dean starts a personal journey on that allows him to face his past-and, more importantly, find his own redemption.

When I lived, I was Helena Ravenclaw. I stole the diadem from my mother. I sought to make myself cleverer, more important than my mother. I ran away with it.

My mother never admitted that the diadem was gone, but pretended that she had it still. She concealed her loss, my dreadful betrayal, even from the other founders of Hogwarts. Then my mother fell ill - fatally ill. In spite of my perfidy, she was desperate to see me one more time. She sent a man who had long loved me, though I spurned his advances, to find me. She knew that he would not rest until he had done so. He tracked me to the forest where I was hiding.

When I refused to return with him, he became violent. Furious at my refusal, jealous of my freedom, he stabbed me. When he saw what he had done, he was overcome with remorse. He took the weapon that had claimed my life, and used it to kill himself.
