Sweet Briar

Hi! I am 28 years old and considering going back to school in fall of 2010. I have been seriously considering going to Sweet Briar - I loved their packet, and while I haven't had a chance to take a campus tour yet, I think I will this fall ( Read more... )

As an older student myself, I would recommend avoiding the dorms. Older students don't work out so well in the dorms, and I've found myself regretting nearly every second of not having my apartment with my kitchen and my pots and my bed...and...and...and. (You see how this goes.)

I'm sure it's a lovely school, but commuting is really the way to go.

Girl I feel you. I am so used to living by myself that I don't even know how I could cope in a dorm.

When I transferred to Mount Holyoke, I was the only one in my social circle who lived off campus. By the end of the first semester, almost every other non-traditional student I knew was trying to find a way out of the dorms. It's not that living on campus is a bad thing - some people absolutely love it. It's just definitely not for everyone. :/

Awesome. I am from a quiet town so that is a good bonus for me, actually. I think I would go crazy if I were in someplace like Gainesville that is so noisy.

Since you are coming near by anyway, you should check out Hollins University, too! :)

Sweet Briar is lovely; I don't know if Amherst could be described the same. I haven't spend lots of time there but I lived in Lynchburg for 7 years, (four as a college student at R-MWC). As mistyvox noted, lots of nice stuff around by way of mountains and nature. And Lynchburg is very close for any shopping needs; Charlottesville is about 50 minutes away, and that's just a great place to spend some time.

I went to Sweet Briar--very supportive, wonderful college community, it's a fantastic place to go to school. Anything you think you might want to do, you will find support. (Which is a great thing about a small women's college.) I majored in music and English, but I heard very good things about the Anthro and Art departments. Sweet Briar is affiliated with a residential artists' community as well, though I can't remember if students exhibit their work there.

Amherst, the official "town" outside SBC, is TINY--Lynchburg, a small city just a few miles away, is where you will probably go to go to restaurants, shopping, etc. Charlottesville is about an hour away. The campus and surrounding area is so beautiful, you will develop a beauty "addiction"--seriously, those mountains and trees will imprint themselves on you for life. :)

Good luck!
