Re-read that sentence. She's insinuating that the spouse in her position is a MALE. "I wish HIM well." That actually received a fantastic response from the graduates.

The controversy surrounds what happened before commencement. Alice Walker was to be the commencement speaker but backed out. Barbara Bush was chosen second and students protested because they believed she was only chosen on her husband's merits, not her personal successes. Surprisingly, her actual speech received positive feedback and the controversy was ended.
