I think this one is mostly categorized as "chick lit" because it takes place on a beach, and thus makes good summer reading. :-) It is definitely deeper than I expected. I didn't start out liking most of the characters, but I was definitely invested in all three of these women by the end of it, and it was much more emotionally taxing than I expected it to be.

As for Melanie, I'm not sure how I feel about her storyline at all. I would be interested to see what Peter was like after the summer. I feel like she was probably more independent and strong in their marriage once she returned to it, but, man, he was a jerk. Hopefully he learned that he couldn't just expect her to come around when he wanted her. And I didn't really like her affair with Josh at all, but the story needed something to make her realize her worth.

I think you're right. I think people saw "beach location" and thought "oh, this will be light." Imagine their suprise, no? :)
I think I liked Vicki the most from the start, but I enjoyed reading Brenda's story the most. I kept wanting to know more about it.
I guess my issue with Melanie is would I put myself in her shoes and do what she did and the answer is no. I don't know, it just seemed a little... far fetched? She's so upset that she can't eat and all she does is sleep, but she still notices this guy Josh and jumps his bones? And I thought it was a little hypocritical, in light of how she was so judgemental of Brenda. But then, that could have been jealousy. Probably was.
