i'm not going to suggest what i play...because it's pretty much the antithesis of what you described haha.

a lot of people are showing interest in the new mmo rift, which is coming out on march 1st, i believe. i really know nothing about it, but since it's generating interest, i thought maybe it might be worthwhile to check it out.

Guild Wars is a bit different, but really good IMO.

You can play with hereos/henchmen, no monthly fees, community is a bit dying, but if you'll play mostly solo that won't be a huge deal.

The only one I've ever really gotten into was Perfect World. It's free to play, though it does have things you can buy for real money if you want to. Only thing is a lot of the quests tend to be the kind you're not that interested in. "Kill this many of this monster" types.

I have to recommend City of Heroes. There are some "kill X number of Y", but those are usually fairly easy, and far between. Joining a party is as simple as joining a party, the more populated servers will often have teams looking for members in their level range. There's also a system that lets you play with higher level characters reasonably well, which is nice.

Combat is a simple matter of finding a target and activating a power, no twitch skills needed. It's been out for quite a while now too, so it has a polish you won't find with newer games. You should be able to get a free trial; I know that people receive them frequently on the GameFAQs message board for the game. Try asking there if you want to give it a shot.

What about Runes of Magic? It's f2P with a cash shop and I've solo'd 90% up to level 40 (of 60) so far. Questing can tend towards the 'kill xx of yyy' at points but I've not found it repetitive or too grind based.

I'm also waiting for RIFT, which is released in march and looks great, even though it's P2P. Or The Secret World if you're willing to wait two years until the apocalypse. (Unfortunately, yes. Yes, I am.)

Otherwise I second the recommendation for LoTRO, as I had a friend who loved it.
