tongue tie and breastfeeding - advise plse!

Apr 27, 2006 09:56

My sis just gave birth 3 weeks ago, and has been having lots of trouble with breastfeeding. At hospital, baby had difficulty latching on, nurse said it was due to short nipples so advised my sis to use a nipple shield. With the nipple shield, baby can latch on, but no my sister's nipples are sore and even bleed at times. I suspect it's because of ( Read more... )

Has she seen a LC for help? She can go to Doris Fok, Sister Kang from Mt Alvernia. Can see the details from MIM's website http://www.momsinmind.com.sg/links.html#bfhelp
In the meantime, did she pump out? It will help to pull the nipple longer if she uses higher end pump, like those use in the hospital.

As for the tongue tie, maybe the LC can also give some advise? Maybe she should seek for 2nd advice/opinion from bfg paed, like Dr Tan from Olive Tree?

Just my one cent opinion... hope things will be better soon. God Bless!

My sis doesn't think going to an LC will help, cos baby may latch on with LC's help but how about when LC is not around? Guess she's quite disappointed already cos I helped baby to latch without nipple shield on Mon night, but after I went home, he simply refused to latch on again without the nipple shield.

I called Doris just now. She said my sis should make an apptmt to see her, then she can assess his latch and also check the tongue tie. If indeed the tongue tie is causing the difficulty in latching, she would recommend the paed surgeon in NUH.

Seen Dr Tan already, in fact, it was Dr Tan who diagnosed the tongue tie and said that it might affect his latch. The 1st paed who assessed my nephew at birth did not notice anything wrong with his tongue.

Guess my next step is to convince my sis to see Doris....wish me luck! :)

You should just arrange the appointment for her and 'persuade' her to go. Sometimes, in this frame of mind, it is better if there is a strong push factor.

It took me four months to get bfg right. Sometimes a change in position might help, e.g. football hold or cross-arm? I found the Boppy pillow an immense help as well. I don't know anything about tongue tie, but agree with jinsiew that she should get another opinion before deciding on something as drastic as an op to correct the problem. Try not to use the nipple shields, it doesn't help baby to latch correctly and in my experience only made the sore nipples worse.

Jane Choe of La Leche League helped me a lot with Alison. Maybe she can contact them for advice.

yeah, agree the nipple shields don't help at all, only makes the latch worse and the nipples more sore. the nurses at TMC really should not have introduced it to her :(

my sis has got my brest friend breastfeeding pillow but she doesn't like it.

thanks for the contact, will pass it on to her.

sorry, side-track: the baby is called Ezra?

agree that she should see LC asap. My gf also has short nipples, for the 1st bb, she had mastitis a few times and delayed to see LC. By the time she saw Doris, her supply had gone down alot. But now she's bfding her 2nd bb very well!

my sis has finally agreed to see an LC, but next week after they are done with the 1-month celebrations. Meantime she is pumping and feeding the baby via bottle.

Sorry to hear this. Baby must be as frustrated as your sis. Has he tried the bottle?

I don't know any paeds in S'pore but I'll check with a paed I know in HK and hear what he says. I agree with the rest about getting more opinions. Meanwhile, I will keep your sis and baby in my prayers.

baby seems to love the bottle, guess it's cos he doesn't have to work as hard. in fact, he's drinking 90ml every 2-3 hrs now.

thanks, your prayers are much appreciated.
