A friend asked me to do a poll on whether you mind being send a message to up-date a fic. So if you could fill it in, as my friend is unsure if she is being rude or not in sending these messages.

Poll Getting a message urging for an update.

Could you please pimp out the poll to get a few more responses for my friend.

friend, poll

It is nice to know people care, but it ain't going to make me write any faster alas.

I run an occasional political statistics web log and write mobile phone video games. Whenever someone prods me to update either one with an improvement I feel bad about how much time I'm not going to have to get the request done. But I should just be happy that people are interested.

Sometimes people comment about how they'd like to see another chapter on a story I post, but I'm usually done already as I like to stop them at the climax, before they get curtainy.

True, the urging will not help if you don't have the time, or inspiration, for the task.

I don't mind getting comments on a current WIP (though, like bogwitch said, it's not going to make me write any faster). It does kind of grate when people ask me about fic that I've flat-out said is going to remain unfinished (especially when it's been taken down completely). It doesn't inspire me to finish it, just makes me feel guilty.

I get you on the feeling guilty thing. I have two I never finished, and never will be now. I do feel guilty enough without reminders.

Having said that - I don't mind polite, friendly 'I am really enjoying this and looking forward to the next chapter', reminders and 'I really enjoy this, will the next chapter be soon?' ones, but ones that imply that they've waited a week already can I get a bloody move on tend to annoy me...

Yes, a lot has to do with the tone of the message. The demanding ones can be very annoying, edging on rude.

That's a really hard question. I don't post WiPs any more because I hate things that aren't finished being out there.

On the one hand I suppose it's nice that people are interested in my story but on the other hand I write as and when I can so someone saying 'please update this' isn't going to make me write any faster

I will not write any faster either. It also has to be said that if inspiration had dried up on it, it will not be going any further. Which is one of the reasons I stick to one shots a lot.

Yeah, I had that with one of my Buffy fics and I forced myself to finish in the end which meant the final chapter wasn't as good. That's why I don't post until stuff is finished now

I think that when you force yourself, you are not really into it. It often shows.
