The people who say that going to the vineyard 'unprepared' was Buffy's worst decision are basing their opinion purely on hindsight. Her plan was actually pretty good. It went horribly wrong because Caleb was stronger than they could have possibly imagined.

They had two Slayers and a century-plus old vampire. That should have been enough to overcome any conceivable opposition. If Caleb hadn't turned out to be - incredibly - even stronger than Glory it certainly would have been enough. It's not Buffy's fault that the plan went wrong; it went wrong because Firefly was cancelled and Joss shoe-horned Nathan Fillon into BtVS and made him incredibly strong because, for some reason, Joss always makes Nathan Fillon incredibly strong.

Timing is a bit out with Firefly, Joss Whedon was working on that at the same time as AtS Season Five. Nathan Fillon was cast after he worked on BtVS Season Seven.

She could've taken more time to find out the lay of the land before rushing into it. She was surprised because she hadn't made the preprations.

Firefly was cancelled in December 2002. 'Dirty Girls' was broadcast on 15th April 2003 and I gather it was filmed not all that long before being broadcast. Similarly Gina Torres turned up on AtS as Jasmine on 02 April 2003.

The description of Joss shoehorning 'Firefly' actors into the Buffyverse isn't an idea I came up with myself; I saw it in posts on 'Whedonesque' and on the Usenet Buffy groups at the time. The general opinion was that Joss had found jobs for most of the 'Firefly' people on Buffy and Angel so that he'd have them to hand if he managed to get the 'Serenity' movie made, which he did.

I think that also - more in the Angel sense of things - that he often saw himself as the protector of what was a family. He made a lot of decisions without asking the rest of his 'crew', for instance when executing battle plans. This autocratic, patriarchal view tended to cover everything.

This is probably true with Buffy as well. She had to take the lead in so many day to day things, that she thought that her ideas were always the best and that she should be followed? does that make sense?

It does make sense, in a way. What gets me is how often they make bad decisions, yet never learn from them. With them both it was always when the whole team was involved that the decisions were better, but they continued to take the autocratic way, often bringing the team down with them.
