I´ve noticed that she´s not so much liked in the Torchwood fandom. Well, maybe not the fandom since i´m not in it. But every single person on my flist who is a fan of Torchwood doesn´t like her. I´m always in the minority with my fav characters! :)
I'd give it a chance because I was impressed with CoE but since it was Jack that brought me to the show it would have to be pretty bloody good to keep me. I have enjoyed Gwen's performance in CoE more than I did in the first two seasons and Torchwood does do pretty amazing female characters. Of course as a slash girl it doesn't do much for me as a writer, but as a viewer it's quite nice to see. So long as they restrict Eve's tendency to squeak like a gerbil she'll be fine.
I guess I'ld probably give it a try, even if only for Ronnie who watchs.
I think RTD is good at writing female characters, as long as he doesn't have a favourite. I'm not quite sure that he doesn't overdo the perfect angle with them, and leave them lacking character development in the consequences of their actions.
I suspect Eve would need a strong supporting cast.
Eve Myles is probably a better actor than John (heresy, I know) but Torchwood is basically The Jack Show so I'd have to have JB in it each episode to make sure I'd tune it. Gwen is the 'everyman' persona so she is ultimately quite disposable. There's little mystique about her character.
In addition, is she supposed to go Weevil hunting with the babe in a sling? I don't see that happening.
Not sure about John Barrowman, if his acting style was just that he came from musicals, and that was what he was taught, I would be fine. What geths me is he can step up his game when he is acting with someone like David Tennamt and James Marsters. I think he just goes for a bigger than life personality rather than skill.
I'm sure that RTD wouldn't kill his favourite, she leads a charmed life. People with far more skill, such as Tosh or Owen, have already bit the bullet. You do die young on Torchwood, unless RTD likes you.
On the subject of RTD, he would have no quams in making Rhys a stay at home dad to allow Gwen to go back to work on Torchwood, and his series.
'Gwen is the 'everyman' persona so she is ultimately quite disposable. ' That's not exactly true. Julie Gardner gave an interview where she said that Torchwood can't go on without Gwen because Gwen is the POV character.
Just this week on BBCAmerica, they have had a commercial with Gwen only. None of the other characters are in it and I haven't seen a commercial with any of the other characters for Torchwood. Not even Jack. Made me wonder about if they were going with the idea of having Gwen take the series over and Jack not showing up again or just later on.
I don't care for either the actress or the character. So if, Gwen is taking over I won't watch it anymore.
'Oh that does sound worrying!' Plus there is this article. Notice how Gareth and John are not even mentioned. If New!Torchwood isn't Gwen-centric, I'll be stunned.
I think Eve is a great actress, but either way I'm not going to watch the show. Ianto's death plus RTD being a complete ass equals no more show for me.
'Ianto's death plus RTD being a complete ass equals no more show for me.' This! I might have given New!Torchwood a chance but RTD's comments have pretty much guaranteed that I won't watch Torchwood or anything else he does. He's made it very clear that he doesn't want or need my viewership.

I don't mind the actress, I'm sure she is nice in RL, I just don't think she could carry the series.
