That last line is beautiful. It shifts the preceding words around a bit for a slightly different meaning/slant. It begins with a simple observation out of duty, but ends up the musings of a father-figure. Brilliant!

Well done. It sort of echos Angelus' thoughts of in order to kill the girl you have to love her. Buffy wasn't the normal slayer and would never be the type of slayer the Council would approve.

Yes, Giles did understand her, and come to love her. He worked so hard to protect her, but she always had to be the protector!

No, no I didn't mean that I only meant that in the begining he loved her because he was duty bound. A watcher loving his slayer. But in the end he loved her more as a father loves his daughter.
