The Myth of Spike!

Bare with me here, these thoughts are a bit rambling. I probably will not be able to probably articulate them until (or if), I get some comments from other people to help me put everything together in my head ( Read more... )

"He has presence on the stage, from his days in theatre, which translates well onto the screen. You remember his performance. Remember the scenes he was in better than others. Even as sparce as they are, they are the ones etched in your memory, so love him or hate him, you remember Spike's time on the screen."

Oh god, I so, so agree with all of the above. Once seen never forgotten.

Joss Whedon: (About James Marsters from the audio commentary for the Buffy episode "Chosen") The ability to turn on a dime is a very rare thing in an actor. From incredibly noble or scary to completely dorky or disarming. He does it with the tongue line earlier, he does it here. You'd be amazed how few people can actually do that, and the last person I ever expected to be able to do it would be a theater-trained guy, but yet, he's got the chops. He can go from Dracula to Jack Benny in a heartbeat, which is one of the reasons why I love him. That, and his shiny, shiny hair.

There's another quote from Joss about how James was the reason that Spike was brought back as a character instead of being killed off. I can't find it at the moment, but will keep looking.

I don't read the comics because I found them boring. James needs his own series on HBO or Showtime so he can go all out without being censored like he would be on Fox or one of the other networks.

The "turn on a dime" quote he also used for DB in the commentary for 'City Of', as well as going from straight actor to comedy as well. I no longer listen to commentaries as they are just an excercise in backslapping.

That includes Supernatural.

I agree with every. single. word you wrote here. I even told James at a con in Toronto that when he guest-starred on The Mountain, he really brought up the acting level of his young co-stars who were abysmally bad when not sharing screen time with him.

And, yes, comic-Spike has James's aura because we see James in Spike and so hear and see him even when the character is in a two dimensional medium.

Hear, hear! *cheers on* The presence is what does it indeed. It does help he is gorgeous to look at, oh yes. But the presence and talent, oh my!
