6 - When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters? If you look at my body of work, I do tend to write more male than female characters, but it's not that I don't like writing female characters. When I have written them, I've had just as much fun and/or headaches writing women as I do men and when I look back at the stuff I wrote when I was a teenager, when I was writing mostly for myself and friends, I wrote far more female characters than male.
I think part of the reason my posted work skews so male is I started posting about the same time I discovered slash so the stuff I was reading at the time was definitely more male dominated. The lack of a lot of interesting female characters in some of the canons that inspired me to write didn't help matters either, although I can't say that for every one.
I dunno. This is probably something I should look at and think is problematic, but I don't want to hang such huge weights on my writing. Keeping motivated and creative is already such a fragile thing, I'm not sure if I start trying to police the kind of things that draw my interest will do anything but stop me writing entirely. I think the best I can realistically do without shooting myself in the creative foot is be aware of it and when I do write female characters do so to the best of my abilities.
(And I will never, never vilify a female character just because she is female, and possibly a canon threat to a fannish slash pairing. There is far too much of that out there and nothing will make me nope out of a story faster than that kind of character assassination.)
