Why do teachers insist on calling on people who don’t want to talk?  If they don’t raise their hand they clearly don’t want to communicate, are not paying attention or just don’t know the answer.  There are students (Yes I am one of them) who want to talk, have opinions and clearly have done their homework!!!  Since this is personal I will not try ( Read more... )

The teacher doesn't worry about the smart ones because they get it... it's the idiots and the slackers that need the extra attention. Take that he's not calling on you as a compliment - he already knows you understand.

Either that or he's just another jerk on a powertrip.

yeah, back before college, a lot of teachers would just tell me to sit in the back of the class and play games or read a book so that i wouldn't be disrupting class all the time with academically relevant, but out of the level of the class, comments and questions. that's just the way it is. I'd suggest taking more advanced classes if possible. if you can't do that, i'm afraid you're just going to have just wait it out. my intro to logic class is required for one of my majors, but because it's so math heavy, i already knew it all backwards and forwards. as a result, the teacher told me not to bother coming to lecture or discussion section.

When I tutor I usually call on those who don't raise their hands for a number of reasons. First of all because sometimes they are shy and just need to be brought out of their shell. Secondly to make sure they are understanding what it is that I am teaching them. Lastly, to make sure they are paying attention.

Also... well it's private. I'll email you.

I spent 7 quarters TAing at UCSC:

1: If you're not paying attention, or didn't read the required material before class, I want to embarrass you about it, and try to get you to change your ways.

2: It's my job to get everyone involved, not just the good students.

3: Sometimes the quiet ones have worthwhile things to say, too. I want to get those out there.
