I still have the camera. I should add to the archive.
two_pi_r, help me get the image retrieval software going again. In 2007, it started throwing some damned error on startup that resulted in ( Read more... )

i have no doubts as to your ability to do well in both calculus and chemistry as neither are terribly difficult conceptually. i do have doubts as to your ability to do so while using alcohol regularly as a stress management tool. while alcohol works great occasionally for this (as well as being a great party inhibition reducer), regular use for stress management equals fail - slow down.

motivation and support for this particular situation might be better found among your classmates than from your friends. arrange for some study time with those who do well in these courses. you should be able to find some willing to help you out. good fortune to you...

It is frustrating because I can simultaneously see how easy they are and yet I just can't learn as fast as the material is being taught. I think the homework load is disproportionate. I agree that alcohol isn't any help at all. I was going to cut it out completely as of last night.

In the words of my photography instructor: "Building two miles of barbed wire fence is hard; college is easy."

You can do it. Chemistry is just applied physics and physics is just applied math.

If you are passing at all, then you are doing incredibly well considering your background in chemistry. My experience with chem at Tech was that it wasn't taught that well and it wasn't nearly as interesting as it could have been. I definitely agree with everything John had to say. Find people in your class to help you, several if you can. Take advantage of the help in the Lavender Lounge (2nd floor of Jones... have Pi show you if you don't know where it is), assuming they still help with chem there. I know you will get through. :)

I know where the Lavender lounge is. Part of my problem is sometimes I just can't think. It is no good when a TA is trying to explain something to me and my mind just shuts off in a fit of nervous panic and all I can do is pretend to understand until I can tactfully retreat. As far as I have seen in all of the time I have spent in the math dept lounge, this only happens to me. This is why I am usually only able to get help from friends who I am comfortable around.

i understand the need to feel comfortable with one's mentor. i was also a tactful retreater up until i came to the realization that if i needed something explained to me a second (or third or fourth) time, that there was a pretty high probability that others around me would also benefit from further elaboration. never pretend to understand something. i can assure you that half of the people who show up at the help sessions feel the same way you do about being the only one who does not "get it ( ... )
