Ogokbap / Mixed Grain Porridge / Whole Grains / Steel Cut Oats

Jun 21, 2009 13:10

As many of you know, I like to try and eat as little processed food in my diet as possible. The only stuff that I just can't give away at the moment is protein powder post training (I am trying to use plain, unflavoured ones more and more though), chicken stock powder (how can you ask an Asian girl to let go of her chicken stock powder??) and ( Read more... )

Oat bran is big with me right now. Ken prefers rolled oats, but will eat the bran.

Calorie and nutritional composition courtesy of Calorie King:

100 g of Brans & Oats: Oat Bran, raw 397(cal) 7(fat) 17.3(protein) 66.2(carb) 15.4(fibre)
100 g of Brans & Oats: Rolled Oats, raw 383(cal) 8.5(fat) 10.5(protein) 61(carb) 6.9(fibre)

So higher in calories, but also higher in fibre and protein, which I think is fantastic. I eat them raw, so they're a little chewy, but I actually don't mind it.

Having said that the texture of rolled oats is nice for a change. :)

I currently have some amaranth and quinoa flakes sitting in my pantry. Will make a mix and try them out for a snack tomorrow and report back!

went and grabbed my bag of oats

100g of Steel Cut Oats = 392 (cal), 8.7 (fat - 1.6g saturated), 8.8 (protein), 64.6g (carb) and no fibre data.

it would make sense for bran/steel cut to be higher in fibre/fat because it has the husk still...i checked another brand of steel cut and they say they have around 10g of protein per 100g. again tho, it would make sense for bran to be higher in protein than both rolled oats/steel cut.

i used to be a huge rolled oats fan - but not since steel cut. i have rolled oats on my yoghurt now - i went to buy some bran yesterday (for baking as well), but didn't get to the health shop in time.

i don't mind quinoa (never tried the flakes - that more processed thing again) - but it's got a very strong flavour and I make a pot and don't usually finish it all :(

I absolutely love oat porridge in the morning, too. Some of my favourite flavour combinations ( ... )

wow, those sugestions sound AMAZING. Have you tried steel cut yet? I LOVE IT - can't get enough. Am definitely going to look for date molasses/apple. I've never tried almond milk - do you buy it or make it yourself?

I posted a good recipe for quinoa a while ago - i had it with banana, toasted coconut, coconut milk and gula melaca/melted brown sugar. the date molasses would probably be such a win for that!!!

you should check the asian supermarket for their grain mixes! i had loads of fun with my korean one and am definitely going to try a few of them to see which one i like better.

I never have! I'm going to look for some though... I can't stand quick or instant oats but love the texture of rolled oats. Surely steel-cut must be even better!

I found the date molasses in the Middle Eastern section of my local international supermarket, but I have seen it at Coles in the international foods section, too. It's basically just 100% dates, with a thick, syrupy texture. Lasts for ages.

That quinoa recipe sounds so tasty! I definitely must try that, thanks!

I am too lazy to make almond milk so I buy the organic one (I forget the brand - Nature's Foods or something). It's only an occasional treat for me, as it's expensive... $5 for 1L.

i made buckwheat (untoasted) porridge the other day - it was a bit disappointing. has a funny bitter taste to it which is like a much stronger quinoa. it's ok with milk/sugar or peanut butter/jam - but it's not a patch on my steel cut oats!!

Well, we've switched from making a typical brunch on weekends (poached eggs on toast with hollandaise, mushroom and onions) to having bruschetta, which is pretty unprocessed. Spelt bread with sunflower seeds, barely toasted, then brushed with good olive oil, rubbed with garlic and topped with chopped tomato, salt, pepper and fresh basil.

The best tomatoes you can get is the secret! We had this in Italy, and Italian tomatoes are fantastic. Norwegian tomatoes are likewise excellent. I'm not sure I ever had a good store-bought tomato in Australia, but homegrown ones, mm.

I LOVE PORRIDGE

I am buying unstabilised oats from the food co-op, which are meant to be creamier than stabilised oats.

I add raisins, sultanas, brown sugar, LSA, maybe cocounut. Inspired by this post today I added grated apple, cinnamon & walnuts & brown sugar.

Date molasses sounds yum

No, only because I have never seen it in the shops.
