You're right, it does. I made a batch last night and in addition to adding garlic, I added sambal oelek for a bit of a chilli hit, and it totally worked. :)
* 1 onion, diced * 2 ribs celery, diced * 1 quarter pumpkin, diced * 2 tbsp oil * Water * 1 cup barley, uncooked * 1 tin of mixed beans * 1 diced tomato + 1/3 cup crushed tomatoes * 1/2 cup of chopped continental parsley * 2 bacon bones * Half a kilo of diced beef * Shake of ground chilli powder
This created a 'heartier', spicier soup. The bacon bones/meat also added a bit more 'flavour' to you. What a great soup for winter - healthy and the barley will be great for low GI post training goodness.
