I have never tried butter chicken, nor any indian food... i lived in a country town til i was 17, and we just about only had chinese, fish and chips, and eventually a maccas there!

my fear of indian is that absolutely everything should be called "*something* surprise!" - i don't know any of the ingredients, nor what 'safe' indian food SHOULD taste like!

does butter chicken taste like butter? i guess it doesn't? what does it taste like? do you think it might still work without the yoghurt and with oil instead of butter in the sauce?

(READ: say something to stop it being scary!! thanks for the recipe - it may just help me conquer my fear. ps. i noticed you're a freaky big brother nerd too :P awwwe.)

well when I was younger 'curry' was curry powder & sultanas!
I never ate a lot of things (and thought I didn't like them) because my mum is such a terrible cook..

Anyway, like most recipes, Indian cooking can have countless variations. Why do you want to substitute the butter and yoghurt? are you avoiding dairy? I'd assume it would be fine, but once you start changing too many things it would just start to taste slightly different I guess. The recipe looks complicated, it's not at all. We've just become lazy via packet and bottled foods!

Not sure why it's called butter chicken (someone else may be able to fill us in?) but its a spicy, tomato-y dish. I've seen packet sauces that you add like a whole bottle of cream to and yeah, they are creamier but no where near as spicy and flavoursome! (not really too hot spicy, just good :-)

oh yeah, i hear you on the curry powder and sultanas! i just had a flashback of tuna mornay as well for some reason *shudder*.

yeah, avoiding dairy - and i don't like many of the 'substitutes'... i'll just fiddle with substituting stuff it til i get it right like everything i guess...

i'm going to make this now... it does sound really, really nice!
