A friend of mine has an old iPod that just gave up the ghost. It came up with the "sad iPod" icon and won't boot. It's very similar to this model, though her display is black and white.

She's taking it to the Apple store to see if they can fix it, but because she's planning on getting an iPhone soon, she probably won't actually end up doing that.

I assume that iTunes can't re-initialise it? In which case it sounds like a dead hard drive rather than corrupted firmware. Sounds like something with potential, anyway.

Let me know if she decides to scrap it. Maybe I can make it worth sending to me...

Yeah, she's tried everything we can think of to fix it. So she's decided to toss it unless you want it.

Well, you can usually find good deals on eBay on iPods that are only slightly stolen...

Yeah, I've looked on eBay, and while it's not that tricky to find cheap stuff there, it's very difficult to find out what kind of condition it's in. In a lot of cases, it's quite possible they're just selling an empty case with no mainboard, hard drive or battery.

I've got no problem with eBay in general, and I even got the DAP I actually use there, but I'd rather deal with people I know, as a rule.

Since Andrew gave me a pink iPod Nano, I have a shuffle going spare that I don't envision using again. There's nothing wrong with it as far as I know - I just got tired of the limited size of it, and the fact that sometimes I don't want to have my music shuffled (when I am in my obsessive state and want to have a certain song on repeat ad nauseam :P)

I've got the 512Mb one.
