Or Wavyhill, from Larry Niven's Warlock stories (in particular, the short story What Good is a Glass Dagger and the novella The Magic Goes Away).
I don't have the books handy, but at one point, The Warlock pulls a skull out of his backpack, and says something like "Long ago, Wavyhill cast a spell to ensure he could never die. He must have been regretting that, these last 30 years..."
Even in more serious examinations of superheroes, like Alan Moore's Watchmen, science is purely secondary to whatever the author really wants to explore.
True, but if it's well done (and Watchmen is a prime example), the sciencyness just fades into the background. Heroes was more on the level of midichlorians...
To be honest, I liked Heroes but it was in that "I hope it gets better" way I often apply to specific comic book titles. I will probably watch the next 3-4 episodes just to see if the writing, acting, characterization, and story becomes more involving. You are right that not much happened in this first episode.
I usually take issue with the whole "10% of our brains" idea. We have conscious access to a very small portion of our brains for a very good reason. Autonomic and other automatic functions of our body are best left on auto-pilot mode. I wouldn't want to have to remember to let my heart beat, personally.
