There were a lot of upgrades today in Dapper. And it turns out compiz is one of them. So I installed it and xserver-xgl. Here's how I got it running.
First install the xserver-xgl and compiz packages using apt-get or synaptic

Run gconf-editor. Under "apps", "compiz", "general", "allscreens", "options" there should be a "active_plugins". Edit it and check if "cube" is there. If not, just add it. You should have the cube now.
Also, once you've run compiz with the 'gconf' option once, the next time you can call it with just 'compiz gconf', since the other plugins will be read from there.
