All of that probably would have been helpful, wouldnt it?

I am 40 and currently weigh 531. I am having an open Duodenal Switch. I am in decent shape, healthwise.

it's totally do-able...i had laproscopic RNY on 10/30/07, and was dancing at a concert 21 days later with no problems...my doc had me taking short walks as soon as i got home from the hospital to build strength, make sure you get all your fluids and protein and concentrate on healing in those early weeks and you should be just fine!

I have been told that I will be walking within 6 hours of the surgery and every 2 hours that I am in the hospital. Blod clots are something they dont play around about apparently. The biggest challenge is going to be eating correctly I think, I have been practicing getting a gallon or more of fluids a day.

you WILL be walking 6 hours after the surgery. or a little longer after, but you're right, they don't play around! and with that they shouldnt.
I just had an open rny monday. so I'm 6 days out. I'm moving around well, feelin' groovy and haven't had too many troubles. Really the only problem I have had is where the incision is hurts. and KNOCK ON WOOD THAT YOU DON'T SNEEZE because you will feel stabbed and be down for the count.
granted, I know our stats are different and that also means different recovery rates and problems, but I think a month out you'd be peachy to go to an event if it just means going, walking around a bit and what not.

practice your protein, too. since your quantities of food & liquid will Be harder to consume, drink much more water than you will need in the future.

Depends on what kind of surgery. I had LAP RNY and was back at work after ten days.

Oh, I see you are having open surgery...will take longer to recover. I ould think you'd still be ok if it's just showing up, sitting, then leaving, but maybe someone else who had open surgery will chime in.

I am going to be 4 weeks out on Monday and I feel really great. I've already been in several social situations and it was fine. By a month out, you will likely be ready to get out of the house!!!

Thanks. I am planning to journal about it pretty extensively once it happens and I start the recovery. Feel free to add me if you want to follow along :)
