We live in a country that likes to make things and is not so good about upkeep. Part of the housing crices that we havent talked about is not just that we helped people get houses that were more than they could afford they got more house than they could take care of ( Read more... )

I would have it just be like a drivers test hell 40 mutilpel choice questions you would test out easy peasy

What system can be grounded (eletrical)

Under what would you find a clean out drain (a sink)

where might you find an air filter you need to clean regularly (in an HVAC system)

Simple stuff

It's not just people under 40. My mom...ugh. Her house has DECADES worth of deferred maintenance. She thinks things will just always keep working, forever and ever. The way her mind works is very, very bizarre.

A big part of the problem is that, in many places, the houses people can afford are the old ones that are already falling apart... Even if you can do the handyman jobs, you still need a new roof.

Or, you go to do a basic repair, and find that a previous owner had done a really bad job, and you not only have to deal with the original problem, but also the botched job. (I have yet another friend dealing with that right now.)
