No! You're reading too much into it. Look at the "And" at a more surface level.

My guess is the "and" would come after the first paragraph. "And I was now in charge."

OH!! OH!!! My turn! The 'And' is before the last 2 paragraphs! "AND the alarm went off . . . " My mind said it even though it wasn't written. It jumped out at me.

I could be wrong though . . .

Here's the answer everybody! "And" only appears ONCE in the whole story. This sentence: "Dan was screaming at me, something about an audience and taping a television show, but all I could focus on was that red switch."
