Aya was awkward.

Not physically. Physically, he was a cat stalking the jungle - all lithe limbs and silent steps and eyes that noticed every single thing that happened around him. Even when he appeared distracted - busying himself with a book or a floral arrangement - he was completely aware of even the tiniest detail of something going on across the room. Efficient, capable, strong, smart.

It was his personality that was his greatest weakness.

“That man is an ass,” Yohji had told their teammates, the first time he had met him.

Aya wasn’t an ass. Most of the time. Still, because of his personality, it was much easier to dismiss him as an ass than to take the time and make the effort to get to know him.

“What the hell are you looking at?”

Yohji grinned as a pair of vibrantly violet eyes rolled up from the cash register to glare at him in a flat, unfriendly manner. He tossed his head and leaned across the counter with a leer.

Aya didn’t give him the chance for a clever comeback. Before Yohji could even open his mouth, the smaller man had rolled his eyes and returned to his task - breaking down the drawer for closing.

“No, Kudoh.”

“What the hell do you mean, ‘no’?” he pouted. “I didn’t say anything!”

“Call it a hunch,” the redhead grumbled. “Get back to work.”

Yohji gave a dramatic sigh. Pouts, however cute, were wasted when his stubborn lover refused to look his way. Reluctantly, he picked up the broom again.

“Shouldn’t you be wearing your glasses to do that?” he asked.

A grunt was his only answer.

“Aya?”

“Are you nagging me, Yohji?”

“Um…no.”

Several moments of silence stretched. Yohji pretended to sweep and tried to keep his mouth shut, but couldn’t hold out for long.

“It’s just…you get a headache when you don’t use your reading glasses.”

“And how is that any business of yours?” he demanded, not looking up from his task.

“Well…you don’t like fooling around when you have a headache.”

Aya slammed his hands down, hard, on the counter. Yohji looked up, but rather than the glare he was expecting, he found that the other man wasn’t even looking at him. He stared down at the register, face pink.

Yohji couldn’t help but to grin. They’d been sleeping together for months, but Aya was still embarrassed whenever they had to actually talk about it. It was part of the awkwardness that Yohji found so appealing - and so very fascinating.

Aya wasn’t an ass. His sharp answers to questions and his reluctance to interact with others were, for the most part, simply the results of what was actually a surprisingly quiet, even shy, nature. Many times his ‘glares’ were really only those strangely intense eyes staring a little too hard.

And behind the awkwardness - the death threats, the growls, the snarls, the glares - was a very sweet personality.

“Get. Back. To. Work.”

Make that very far behind the awkwardness.

“Come on - I’m just worried about you.”

“Kudoh!”

He went back to sweeping. He knew when to stop pushing.

The shop was silent as they worked. They were alone - Ken and Omi had gone to pick up some dinner, and they had decided to lock the doors early after a slow day of business. Yohji was looking forward to calling it an early night and, if he was lucky, spending some ‘quality time’ alone with his adorably awkward lover. Balancing the fine line between teasing and annoying the hell out of the man was really becoming an art form.

“What do you want to do tonight?” Yohji asked, after he judged a sufficient time had passed. He kept sweeping as he spoke, as if to prove his work-ethic.

Aya had finished breaking down the drawer and was now working on the deposit. He was still blushing a little. “I thought you had already decided that for us.”

“Hell, Aya, you know that’s not what I meant.”

He glanced at him for a brief moment, then went back to counting out the money. “Then it doesn’t matter if I get a headache.”

“Aya!”

“Now you’re whining?”

“You’re so cruel.”

“You’re so overdramatic.”

“Aya…”

“Don’t beg.”

“Then don’t make me beg!”

He finished counting the money and zipped it up in the deposit envelope. Only once the task was finished did he look up again.

“I want to relax in a hot bath,” he said bluntly, holding out the envelope. “If you drop this in the bank’s night deposit for me, I might let you join me.”

Yohji stared at him for a long moment before he realized the other man was serious. He dropped the broom right where he stood and rushed to take the envelope, more than willing to agree to that bargain.

Aya laughed at him a little when he nearly tripped over a display. His eyes were warm and fond as he watched him approach, his face bearing a rare expression of happiness.

Aya let him kiss him as he reached him, and even wrapped an arm around his neck to prolong it from the simple, chaste peck it would otherwise have been. His small body always fit so perfectly in Yohji’s arms - as if they had been made for each other. Yohji had never been a big believer in fate, but when Aya’s body was pressed to his own he felt as if everything that had ever happened in either of their lives had occurred simply for the purpose of bringing them together. For a moment Yohji actually forgot about anything else, lifting his lover so that Aya was sitting perched atop the counter as he deepened the kiss.

Aya’s hands slid into his hair, and after a moment he pulled, forcing Yohji to pull back.

“You have to take the deposit,” he said, almost helplessly. His voice was breathy, his eyes dark with desire.

Yohji grinned at him. “Stubborn bastard.”

“Kudoh.”

“I’m going. I’m going!” he laughed. It took real effort to pull away from the lovely man when he looked like that - lips swollen from kissing, eyes filled with deep affection, perhaps even love. He kissed the tip of his nose as he took the envelope from him. “You know, we’d both have a lot more fun if you were less work-oriented.”

“Go.”

“One of these days I’m just gonna tie you to the bed,” he warned, heading for the door. “We’ll see how much work you get done then!”

Aya’s laughter followed him into the night.

Aya was awkward. He had to fight with himself to express his feelings for Yohji, to express any of his needs, his wants, his desires. He glared and snapped and threatened and fought with every fiber of his being to hide the sweet, shy man beneath. He was awkward -

And Yohji was desperately in love with him.
