"But Sometimes I Forget, I've Got A Perfect Body, Because My Eyelashes Catch My Sweat"

My family has always been extraordinarily health-conscious. Not for us the artery-clogging hedonism of McDonalds, or the sedentary lifestyle of our peers! Nay, our food is healthiful, and our physical activities strenuous!

But guess what? I'm still a big girl. 5'8", with wide shoulders and hips to match. I'm not fat, (and no, this isn't a "I'm not ( Read more... )

Oh my gosh. That is freaking ridiculous. Making twelve year olds that self conscious...I hate to see how that screws them up later. They're still growing and developing at that age for crying out loud. And weighing them in front of the class? Isn't that an invasion of privacy? D:

I really don't think you're in the wrong here. It's ridiculous :-\

That's what I thought. I mean, dear God, couldn't you at least weigh the poor little bastards in the nurses' office or something?

What the flying fuck.

I'm sorry for the profanity, but while I'm okay with healthy eating and healthy lifestyle and such, the class you just described feels so wrong.

Apparently they'll be weighed later. Also in front of the class.

Oh, this is just ASKING for it. Someone is getting this all WRONG.

If this doesn't deserve profanity, I don't know what does. XD And yeah, I'm totally down with a healthy lifestyle too, but I think how a healthy lifestyle manifests itself physically varies from person to person. It makes me sad that we all try to squish into a very specific mold.

This makes me so mad. I mean, these are KIDS. There are other ways to promote healthy lifestyle. This reeks of public shaming and disregard of privacy, and that is just messed up, IMHO.

You're not wrong for being squicked out about this.

I hope this is just one well-meaning but misguided teacher's policy and nothing school-wide. In any case, someone will probably call shenanigans on this, if not for all the emotional duress it's bound to cause students, then for sheer impracticality of the program. A 12 year old still has little/no control over their diet, and weight is only one factor that goes into determining health. A teacher taking on the role of a nutritionist smells like a lawsuit, and so on and on and on....

Dude, I might call bullshit on this. I've got three days before I head back to school. That's enough time to whip parents into a righteously pissed off fury, I think. XD

But yeah, I totally agree with what you're saying. Just because someone is an "ideal weight" that doesn't mean they're healthy. It just means they reach a certain number on the scale.

I wanna strangle a teacher. Badly. That is...Gah, I hate this society and it's stupid obsessions with health and thin and...gah! I have no words for this, mostly because everything I'm thinking is a mass of anger at this idiotic teacher. Whatever happened to keeping journals of your thoughts everyday for a grade instead?

Also, no offence intended, but I'd be likely to slap your mom. I weigh 210, give or take a pound. I'm not fat, but I'm heading that way...

I think it's people's perceptions of weight that are totally screwed up. Like, yeah, okay, maybe 127 looks good on my mom, but dear God, it would look positively disgusting on someone as tall as me. When it comes to weight, one size does not fit all.

Oh goodness. What's the name of this program? Future Eating Disorders 101?
Jeezus.
No. Just no.
If they want to do a health/ food awareness program they need to focus on making eating healthy a positive fun thing, with an emphasis on growing food, food prep, cooking, creating a relaxed un-rushed mealtime environment-- not on "dieting"!
She's going to *weigh* 12-year olds in front of their classmates???
That is fucked up...I mean, shaming and destructive beyond all belief.

Ugh, I know. I love to eat and cook, and so I think it's so horrible that kids are being taught that it's a destructive thing.
