Sometimes, a person can be too close to a situation to really see what's going on. Sometimes, it takes the proverbial boot to the seat of one's trousers

Sophie lifts her left hand up to her chest to rest it over her husband's; her right continues to ply her needle through the fabric, held in place wth her left elbow.
"Wizard Suliman came by hoping to see you," she says absently. "I told him you'd call tomorrow. And the Cobblers have gone through their anti-wart powder again, we'll have to make up a new batch."
"Is that so? I'm sorry I missed him, but I had to make sure that door was in the right place." That's where he spent the bulk of the day, disguised as a cat, wandering the streets of Midgar, familiarizing himself with it. Really, he had to take possession of the first place he had when he built the door and that's what made it so difficult. In the past, he and Calcifer have owned a property first and knew what it was and what they'd do with it before moving the castle to allow it. But this was new and untested magic, and had he suspected earlier what he suspects now, he might not have taken the risk

"Oh yes, he understood, of course," Sophie says. Howl can't see her smile, he's at the wrong angle, but he can should be able to hear it in her voice. "You're alike in that way, aren't you? You should hear Lettie get started on one of her rants about what Suliman's like when he's started experimenting on a new spell."
Her hand goes higher and tugs lightly on a lock of her Howl's hair. (She has to stop sewing at this point, since her elbow isn't anchoring the fabric anymore.) "You're lucky you married a witch and not another wizard."
"Luckily, I'm not the sort of wizard who goes in for other wizards, only witches." So very fondly now, he kisses the side of her face. "What are you working on, Sophie?"
He's actually fairly terrified by what he's just discovered, but he won't let on. It's something that needs to take its time sinking in, but in the meantime he can act as normally as ever, if he ever acts normally to start with. Pulling up another chair, he takes his seat by her side. Usually he won't touch the fabrics; he's got a tendency to make them do unusual things although he does that perfectly innocently. No, Sophie's the one with the artistic talent in this family. But he goes ahead and lays his hand on the material to stabilize it for her.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of his life is how much he loves her, and he's so glad for that. If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't even have his heart.
