Mistletoe [for Riku]

Jan 05, 2010 22:06

Dairine likes the Christmas decorations, even if it's all a bit gingerbread house, but by almost Christmas she's sort of stopped noticing them. She'd been out training with the Titans, which had left her exhausted and sore but in a good way, and after a good hot shower she's in sweats and a t-shirt and looking for something to curl up with and read ( Read more... )

Riku had spent the better part of the day running around the island making snow-Heartless. They were all over the place now; next to the dojo, peeking out from behind the Winchester, and even guarding the entrance to the compound. His shoulder and wrist had finally healed, and making snow-Heartless had been the first thing that had come to mind when trying to decide how to make the best use of that fact. Well, maybe not the first thing, but he wouldn't be up to sparring with Roxas until he regained some of the strength in his arm ( ... )

"Huh? O-oh yeah." He let go of Dairine and fumbled around for his black coat. It took him several tries to retrieve it, and when he straightened back up he was almost as red as Dairine was. Stepping quickly out of the doorway, he headed over to the fireplace and flopped down into a chair with a ragged sigh. Trying desperately to think of something to talk about other then the passionate kiss they'd just shared, Riku glanced around and spotted the comic books Dairine had been holding earlier.

"So, uh, what were you reading before..." He swallowed hard and tried again. "I'm mean, did you find something good to read?" he finished lamely.

"Comic books," Dairine answers awkwardly, holding up the stack to show him. She's not really sure what's supposed to happen now, if anything is.

"Cool. I found some Mickey Mouse comics the other day..." His voice trailed off and the room was quiet except for the crackling of the fire. With thoughts of Dairine still swirling around in his head Riku couldn't think of anything else to say. He looked thoughtfully at the pretty redhead and tried to figure out exactly why that was. When the answer came to him he felt like an idiot for not figuring it out sooner. He didn't just like Dairine, he like liked her.

Determined to do something about it, Riku stood up and walked purposely over to Dairine. He stopped when he was about an arm's length away and said, "So, would you like to go out on a date sometime? Maybe have dinner and watch a movie or something?"

Which, a little weirdly, makes her feel less awkward. Dairine might be total crap at emotional and social interaction, but she can appreciate a nice straightforward question. Besides, she knows the answer to this one.

"Yeah," she answers, peering at him through a messy fall of red hair. "I think I would."

Riku reached out to brush the hair away from Dairine's face. "Cool," he said with a smile. "In the meantime, why don't I go get us some hot chocolate to help us relax? Maybe I'll even try my luck with the bookshelf and we can just hang out and read for a while, okay?" His smile quirked a bit as he added, "I assume you don't mind if I stick around."

"No, I don't mind if you stick around," Dairine admits, not entirely sure why it feels like such a defeat to say that when it's the truth. She'll worry about it later. "Especially if you want to bring me chocolate," she adds with a playful grin.

"It's a deal," he said with a small nod. "I'll be right back." He left the rec room and returned a few minutes later, being careful to avoid the mistletoe each time, with two steaming mugs of hot chocolate. He handed one to Dairine before heading over to the bookshelf. A quick check produced several Mickey Mouse comics. Taking his find he sat down close enough to Dairine to talk but far enough away that he wasn't crowding her.

"Thanks," Dairine says, curled up in the corner of the couch with her comic. She sneaks looks at him sometimes, when she's lingering too long on a page, trying to work out what to think about this whole thing. A date? Really? But she's eighteen years old now, surely it's time?
