Brian, this made me laugh.

The recognition that healers have a unique status is present in almost all cultures. Obviously, part of the effectiveness of healers rests on the perception that they are unusually spiritual, selfless, or knowledgeable, and in possesion of a power not available to regular people.

selfless maybe, knowledgeable definately... but spiritual... i dunno.. Even my sister lost faith in whatever she was into over the years of being a nurse... It's amazing what seeing people suffer on a daily basis can do to you... That's why i respect medicine but i could never get myself into it... i don't want to lose that side of me that still wants to believe in something irrational but beautiful.. not neccesarily a god persay... but just a good idea to get me through the worst, ya know?

By spiritual it's mostly referring to cultures with shamans and the like.
