Apologies for the recent downer posts and lack of replies to most things. I suspect that, given my first real break in months, all my stress and exhaustion finally caught up with me. But I've been chugging books and tea and will be back at full whenever my cat recovers from whatever illness he's picked up ( Read more... )

FWIW, I enjoyed The Phoenix Guards much more the second time I read it than the first. When you already know what's going to happen, it's much easier to skip the Paarfi rambles and read the stuff you want. Reading it now feels like meeting an old friend.

That makes sense. It's a far more leisurely book than the others I've been reading, so it's likely my current stress/impatience is making it more difficult to properly enjoy. But one day I'll book a weekend with sun and wine and tiny snacks, and that will likely help. :)

Dresden #14 is a disappointment after Dresden #13. #13 is one of the more epic things I've ever read and is really well put together... #14 is just kinda there.

Interesting. I'm still not sure how I feel about #13. The information in #13, what the world was like, what happened to people, etc. felt epic, but the primary plot thread seemed like a thin, uninteresting ruse to show the rest off.

I really enjoyed Deathless, and I think I've read other Valente and liked it as well. I think it's partly that her writing style is just.... pretty.

Also I think I need to borrow/acquire some of these books set in London. I love to read books set in cities I know, because then I get a healthy dose of squee with my story. :)

That's the biggest problem with electronic copies! I'd simply drop some off on Wednesday if I could.
