This was really, really well written. I love how you portray Kurt - how he doesn't like that he can't feel, but does care at the same time. And the little pieces about how it's a conscious effort to smile and hold eye contact and stuff...just beautiful.

Thank you! I think he'd focus more on the feeling of emptiness itself than the bit of caring that's lodged in his heart there somewhere between all the not caring, because he'd think that's easier than having to dealing with the worse feelings his emptiness could derive. It probably feels safer to be empty than an intense anger or sadness.

Lovely story with a but. raven_myope400 January 23 2012, 01:29:00 UTC
Firstly, I really do love your story. It's well written, thoughtful and has a real emotional depth.

This is where the but comes in. The Kurt you've shown here doesn't read as a psychopth (I only know this because I did quite a bit of research for a full length novel I'm working on). The key symptoms of psychopathy are summed up by Dr. Robert D. Hare, PhD in his book 'Without Conscience' as 1) glib and superficial, 2) egocentric and grandiose, 3) lack of remorse or guilt, 4) lack of empathy, 5) deceitful and manipulative, 6) shallow emotions, 7) impulsive, 8) poor behavior controls, 9) need for excitement, 10) lack of responsibility, 11) early behavior problems, and 12) adult antisocial behavior.

That book and another called 'The Sociopath Next Door' by Dr. Martha Stout, Ph.D. are realy good if you want to find out more
