A day it had been since Chase's accident, and Lucy hadn't yet slept at all, too busy fretting about him to try and get herself some rest. It was nothing new, the overwhelming need she felt to hold on tight to the people she had left here as their number constantly dwindled, but it was different like this, in the face of something so physically ( Read more... )

Veronica Mars was, in a word, exhausted. Managing a couple classes, the council and a social life was a juggling act she'd perfected long ago, but tossing a toddler and an extra dog into the mix had thrown her off balance in a way she was really only just beginning to correct. With a cup of coffee of her own and a child clambering under the table, she looked up with a smile and a raised brow. "Peachy keen," she said and almost meant it. Tired and busy though she was, she didn't really mind. "It's supposed to be feeding time at the zoo, but the animals? Not so cooperative. You?"

"Tired," Lucy replied, running a hand back through her hair with a heavy exhale. She had no reason to try to deny it, and probably wouldn't have been able to even if she'd tried. Still, she had no intention of making any more of her problems than was necessary. It wasn't like she was the only one with so much on her mind (though looking after Chase might have been comparable to taking in a toddler, and he was probably a hell of a lot more stupid than Sam). "Friend of mine got in an accident, I spent the night dragging him to the clinic. Guess it'd been too long since I had some excitement to deal with. Pets don't feel like behaving, huh?"

"Pets and children," Veronica answered. "She's still real big on the word 'no.'" There was a reason they were called the terrible twos, but Veronica doubted turning three would magically make managing a toddler simpler. She did the best she could, though, and she couldn't blame Sam for being a little difficult. "I heard. About the accident -- on Tony's bike, right?" She kept in the know as best she could, both for her job and just because that was her nature, and accidents like that were hardly common. She didn't know Chase Stein really, but he reminded her, in appearance, of the guys back home enough that, once she'd actually remembered who he was, she couldn't be too surprised.

"Yeah." Lucy nodded once, expression carefully schooled into something less grim. The irony in that, that it had been Chase on Tony's bike when she'd with them both wasn't lost on her, and had it not been so serious, she might've found it amusing. As it was, though, it was hard to be anything less than sick with worry. After Veronica, Chase was the oldest friend she had here, someone who had become some odd version of family. She wasn't sure she would have been able to forgive herself if anything more serious happened to him. None of that being anything she wanted to say, though, she just sighed. "No one'll be getting on that bike again any time soon, least of all him. It was just so f- so incredibly stupid."
