He’s lost to the world; it’s her voice that brings him back to it. He feels small hands on his face, shaking him awake.
“Damon.” He opens his eyes to see her.
Not real, his pain-addled mind tells him, not here.
It’s only when Stefan comes into view that he knows he’s awake. He is unchained, weakened knees buckle. It takes both of them to keep him upright.
“You two are so stupid,” he manages to mutter as they carry him away, but his voice cracks. For the first time in a lifetime, he allows himself to feel safe, loved.
