Racism on a Spectrum

For people who think that the HP / Word Use Discussion (I refuse to call it a wank) is minor and people should be discussing real racism, I'd like to point your attention to the Jena 6.

There were nooses on a tree in a schoolyard. Nooses. A black kid sat down under the tree at lunchtime, a place where white students usually sat and the next day ( Read more... )

I've been following the Jena 6 thing.

Here in West Memphis, the class of 2012 has lost a student.
DeAunta Farrow was out after 10 PM with his 14 year old cousin. They had just left the Stop & Go after getting chips and pop. When the cops checked on him, he brandished a realistic looking toy gun.
The cop, fearing for his own life, shot him.

He was 12.
He went to kindergarten with my oldest son.
The brutal irony is he wanted to grow up and be a police officer himself.

He's unfortunately not the first. A couple of years ago it was another little boy with a water pistol. The cop's response was that the toys needed to stop looking realistic. Now that it was apparently SOP to shoot to kill a child who might have a gun (and the racial profiling involved in believing a black child would have a real gun vs a white child. How many white children show their guns to cops who stop them, because they're gleeing and playful?)

No, he's not. He's not even the first dead child at the hands of a cop in West Memphis this year.

Our next-door neighbors lost their 16 year-old granddaughter when a speeding police car, not running lights or sirens, broadsided her at the corner of our street and the main artery. Her little sister survived the accident with multiple injuries. (My younger son is sweet on her)

As usual, the cops covered their asses here too: "Oh but he was running lights and sirens." Every eyewitness says differently.

Yeah, I remember reading about Jena 6 yesterday while browsing through links.

*hugs you*

If there were more sunshine here, I think that I'd go tan as an act of sheer defiance. XD Dark skin scares you? THIS IS HOW DARK I CAN GET!

I haven't been saying much but you know you have my support. My background being complicated I don't feel qualified to say much.
