Note: I'm not going to talk too historically here, because the best person to do so would be someone who's had dreads for going on twenty or twenty five years and who was part of the community in the Caribbean.
Don't watch SGA so can't say anything intelligent about that, but I wanted to thank you for posting about Rastafarianism. When I was growing up Rastas were "those dirty beggars living under bridges" and according to my mother, they believe Jah told them the earth belongs to them and that's why they steal things from hardworking (Indian) people. I know she -- like so many Trinis, it seems -- is hardwired to this black vs.indian thing so I never took it to heart, but all the same I never got to know any Rastas before we moved and I appreciate the insider look, as it were.
I've considered letting my hair get matted into locks Shiva-style, but man, the stigma they bring when you're looking for a job is really preventative.
You considered getting Jatta? That's cool. Though like I mentioned, I hear you on the 'looking decent/ respectable' thing. It wouldn't matter if you kept them wrapped in a cloth, or wore or snood, people would have pre-judgements
( ... )
I won't call John Sheppard a foodball loving, beer drinking, white bread eating, fast food having, military fuck up, secretly racist but nigga lusting, wanna be bad boy who gets by on luck if you won't call Ronon an ooga booga, non-verbal near pre-verbal, wild hair, warrior-wise man who'll protect the white men (and women) of the Milky Way from their own mistakes when he's not fucking deeply into their oh so pale skin.
I don't watch / read SGA, so the specific character stuff is passing me by, but as a piece on a part of yourself and your history I'm reading, absorbed, and thanking you.
Really? Thank you. And I guess I should thank her. It was really meant to be more personal, but then I got a little upset there in the middle - or splashed around the middle.
