I'm watching a DVD of the defunct cable show, Deadwood. Part of the storyline involves an uber-racist White man (as if MOST White men weren't like that in America in 1877), who is also poor, White trash and an alcoholic, just so we make sure that only THOSE types of WP are racist. Said White man had almost tarred and featured and lynched a Black ( Read more... )

I watched Deadwood and yeah I remember that storyline all too well sadly.

To take your point further, shit like this is what leads to white folks having the mindset that POCs can't/shouldn't take up for themselves. We're supposed to rise above and be the better human being.

Because heaven forbid the white folks not be racist assholes to begin with. The burden of being decent human beings lies solely on us.

It's too haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrd for them not to be racist!

And we should be happy over teaching them how to treat us like human beings!

You are right about boundaries. A lot of stuff that white people don't think is racist is racist because they assume that black people don't have the right to have boundaries. This gets into touching someone's hair or saying something inappropriate because you think you're the person's friend.

In codependency literature they're always saying things like you have the right to say no, you have the right to say if something doesn't feel right. It shouldn't be on the victim to be the bigger person. And the bad part about this was the relationship between the black man and the white man was nil.

I don't think though that's what the writers were thinking. I think they wrote it as irony that now the white man is dependent on the black man for his survival. I mean that's how I saw it when I first watched the show.

This proves that people can watch the very same show and have different opinions about it and none of those are incorrect.

how the hell did you sit through that entire thing anonymous August 29 2010, 04:05:42 UTC
Every where I go, I'm tired of people acting holy and shit trying to tell me its pointless to get upset because at the end of the day they're human just like us. I'm just tired. I don't know why people don't understand how exhausting and hurtful just experiencing the microaggressions every damn day. Its like I'm suffocating and on top of that I'm supposed to smile and say thank you. To hell with that. I'm about to start grad school this week, I'm anxious to see how many people of color there are besides myself but I'm so over being nice just to make other people feel comfortable with their racism. I don't care if people think I'm a stereotype because of the way I defend myself. I'm a human being, I have feelings and I have a right to feel angry and express that with my intellect. Sorry that I'm ranting but, I feel like this will never end.
